I have ten years' experience working as a relationship counsellor, including individuals, couples and facilitating a variety of groups. I have fourteen years experience working with people who are dependent on prescription medication and/or who suffer from panic and anxiety disorders, depression or from the impact of trauma. Prior to becoming a psychologist, I worked in social research and, before that, in human relations.

Influences and Approaches to Counselling

My initial training embraced a cognitive behavioural framework to counselling and, where appropriate, I often utilise CBT techniques. CBT aims to help clients identify the strong connections between thoughts and feelings and to modify and challenge the former in order to relieve the negative emotions.

In relationship counselling, I adhere to a more systemic approach which aims to help clients achieve and examine the dynamics and interactions they would like, rather than repeat old habits which lead to the opposite outcome of what people really want.

I work from a belief that all relationships can achieve some positive change if people have the good will to examine their part in the process and are committed to making some effort.

Areas of Particular Interest

I enjoy both individual and couple work as well as facilitating groups. All modalities have value and I like helping people determine what will best meet their needs. I also enjoy providing supervision. In addition I have trained as a yoga teacher and I am very interested in the mind/body connection and the impact of health on mood and relationships and vice versa.
