Jodie Mattingley

About Therapy with Jodie:

Throughout therapy I maintain empathy, warmth and enthusiasm, and focus on building a strong therapeutic alliance between the client and clinical psychologist. I strongly believe that it is important for therapy to be led by empirical research while tailored to the individual. As such, I strive to take into account each individual’s unique values, strengths and challenges and encourage clients to be active participants in therapy. I believe that clients are the experts in their own lives and that therapy should be adapted to meet their specific, individual needs. Therefore, I aim to listen and adapt, rather than using a one-size fits all approach.

Training and Approaches:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Like most psychologists, I initially trained in cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). CBT focuses on identifying and improving unhelpful thoughts and behaviours, to help clients overcome a wide range of challenges.

Acceptance Commitment Therapy

Over time I have sought additional training in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), which is more values-focused. I have found that ACT is often helpful for clients looking for an alternative, less directive, approach than CBT. In particular, I have found that ACT can be helpful for clients who feel they are at war with themselves, or struggling with internal conflicts, or torn between competing interests, or perhaps wondering where to from here in life. I also find that ACT can be Neuro-affirming for neurodivergent clients.

For clients who are seeking therapy for trauma related disorders such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder:

In addition to ACT and CBT, I offer trauma specific treatment options, including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Schema therapy.

For clients struggling with eating disorders/disordered eating (over the age of 17):

I offer eating disorder specific therapies including: CBT for eating disorders (CBT-E), CBT for AFRID (CBT-AR).

Positive Psychology

In my experience, I have found that positive psychology can particularly benefit clients who are feeling content with life and who are looking at an approach which focusses on strengths and growth, rather than focussing on a specific problem or disorder.
